Being an Architect

Here are a few quips on being an architect:

  • Architects shouldn't work in an ivory tower, they should get involved in daily operations
  • Architects must see trees without loosing view of the forest
  • Architects should be responsible for creating an environment that produces high quality software

What do you think? Post your answers in the comments.

  1. Yes, this is exactly what I'm thinking ....

however, most of the time the Forest is so big that there's not enough time in a day to cover all three aspects ...

    - Looking at trees takes time ...
    - Defining the forest takes time ...
    - Creating an Environment require organizational changes .... takes lot of time (and evangilization!!!)

This is why I think key to success is daily communication with good team members and management.

    - Communicate the vision (the Forest) to team so they can be aware of the big picture.
    - Communicate the problem (the trees) to Architects so they can align vision and/or teams
    - Communicate the solutions to management in order to enable changes in the right direction ....

That makes a lot to align ...

At the end, when everything is done, we all have the impression that evolution happens by chances !!!

  2. Agreed, however as long as the communication remains both ways.
